Mixed Media Quickie Number Thirty-Two

Air Mail
book cutouts, painted newspaper bits, found envelope, matboard
8 x 10 inches
Okay, this is one of my favorites.  Who doesn't love astronauts?  I don't think this letter would make the trip, though.  No air in space.

Special Offering
found envelopes, book cutouts, vinyl, paper
8 x 10 inches
As with my last collage, I have been waiting a very long time to finally use this vinyl line drawing of my great aunt in something.  It was originally just a test for the cutter but I don't throw anything away, and this is why.  Tells a bit of a story, different for everyone.

Mixed Media Quickie Number Thirty

Please Return
found letter, magazine and book cut outs, vinyl
8 x 10 inches
I have been trying to work in this green chair for months now.  FINALLY!  This piece reminds me of something that would be found on a porch, or in a mailbox on an abandoned house, and the chair is definitely on that porch.  But it's a bit mildewy.

Secrets in Innes
found envelope, painted paper, painted found newspaper, magazine/book/
greeting card cutouts, vinyl
approx. 14 x 11 inches
This envelope is so worn it almost feels like cotton.  FYI, I think this newspaper clipping is from a paper in Hastings, Nebraska.  It's also from the '60s--big thanks to a neighbor for holding on to these until I was ready to walk by and take them (not that they knew that).

Cleaned Out My Pocket
papers, used tea bag, comic book, wallpaper, staples
approx. 8 x 10 inches
I love working tea bags into pieces.  And staples!  I bit of a different feel than glue (although there's plenty of glue in this, too!).  The background paper is from a composition book that had my grandpa's name on the front, but it was unused.  (c. 1920)

Vacation Days
magazine/book/newspaper/catalog pieces, found photo, metallic marker
approx. 9 x 14 inches
I found this little ripped up photo on a walk several years ago of a little guy doing something Catholic (I think?).  It was one of the first found photos in the wild, and I can't believe I put it in a place I could rediscover it this many years and a studio move later.  The other papers span from the 1920s to a calendar from the 2000s sometime, found on the farm, at my other grandparents' house, in a friend's attic, in some old high school papers I kept, and at a thrift store or two.

Cycles
found wallpaper, book/greeting card cutouts,
black and white photo on matboard, vinyl
10 x 13
This might be the last collage made with the old guys as the background.  Maybe if I find more, but the two I have left aren't quite right.

And, yeah, those are teeth there in the bottom left.  PILES OF TEETH.

Peeping Tom

His name probably isn't actually Tom.  Probably Herald.

That parasol, though.

1943
black and white photo on matboard, painted newspaper, book
cutouts, wallpaper
10 x 13 inches
I happened to get a whole set of books published in 1943 and only realized after I finished that the dates all lined up here (this guy in the background was the KC Club prez in 1943).

Nice hat, dude.  More frosting!

This is a really gluttonous piece--bullets, cigarettes (I HATE CIGARETTES SO MUCH AND GET SO GROSSED OUT WHEN I SEE AN AD FOR THEM IN ALL THESE '70s AND '80s MAGAZINES!!!), cake, peekaboos...

Side note: I think about cake literally everyday.  Also cookies and ice cream.
